The next generation small block engine family will deliver improved fuel efficiency through the use of direct injection and an all-new advanced combustion system design.  The new engine family will rely exclusively on aluminum engine blocks, which are lighter and contribute to the improved fuel efficiency. In addition to being E85 ethanol capable, these engines are being designed with the capability to meet increasingly stringent criteria emissions standards expected throughout this decade. 

The St. Catharines announcement follows other recent announcements by GM Canada, including the addition of a third shift at the Oshawa assembly to support the production of the Chevy Equinox and a second shift at the flexible manufacturing line to support the Buick Regal and Chevy Camaro. A third shift was also added at CAMI Automotive recalling 350 employees. In April, the company also announced that it repaid the loan it received from the Canadian government at the beginning of the financial crisis.
