From the editor

Happy Holidays!

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank you, the readers, for your support in the last few months, as I've settled into the role of editor for Manufacturing AUTOMATION. 2005 was a strong year for the publication, and 2006 promises to be even better.

The year will kick off with a great January/February issue, which focuses on education. The issue will include:

The 7th Annual Automation Training and Education Guide: A directory of automation-specific education and training courses offered at colleges and universities across Canada.

Looking for Mr. and Ms. Right: We talk to recruiters, industry, colleges and universities to find out what skills the manufacturing industry is looking for in graduates, and what is being done to address the looming skilled trades shortage.

Top five: Industry experts reveal what they see as the top industrial automation technologies you should have on your plant floor in 2006 and beyond.

Test and measurement: The ABCs of leak detection: Pressure decay, mass flow and helium testing technology today.

Plus: The latest news, appointment announcements and trends, as well as a selection of the latest power supplies, test and measurement solutions, interconnection devices, wire and cable products, and automation software offerings.

Keep an eye out for it at the end of January. I encourage you to send me a note and let me know your thoughts on our magazine. Tell me about the issues you face, and please share what you are doing to overcome the industry's hurdles. I want to hear your stories. I hope to meet more of you in the coming year. Have a safe and happy holiday.

Globalization drives PLC market growth
DEDHAM, Mass.
- A study by the ARC Advisory Group, Programmable Logic Controller Worldwide Outlook, forecasts that the programmable logic controller (PLC) market will grow to more than $9 billion in 2009, up from nearly $7 billion in 2004. The expected compounded annual growth rate of 5.9 per cent over the next five years is being attributed to the fact that many elements of modern information technology (IT) are incorporated into PLCs, raising their attractiveness as a centre stage plant-floor controller among worldwide manufacturers, according to the report.
"Global manufacturers are challenged to seek automation equipment that supports their business objectives such as improving return on assets, enhancing overall equipment effectiveness and providing real-time performance management," said senior analyst Himanshu Shah, the principal author of the study. "The PLC, being primarily an automation controller designed with modern IT features, plays a key role in supporting these objectives."
The report forecasts a modest turnaround in overall capital spending in 2005 and beyond, as manufacturers gear up production to meet rising global demand. This turnaround, according to the report, should result in a growing demand for automation equipment, including PLCs.
Information about this study is available at www.arcweb.com/res/plc.

Latching solenoid valves
Pneumadyne's 10- and 15-mm latching solenoid valves are designed for applications where low power consumption is required. The latching feature eliminates the need for continuous power to maintain the position of the two- and three-way valves. An internal magnet holds the valve in the activated position when the power supply is removed. Applying a second electrical signal unlatches and exhausts the valve to atmosphere.
