Siemens donates $100K in equipment to Fleming College

Oct. 28, 2015 – Students, staff and guests gathered yesterday to recognize an in-kind donation of equipment, software and training from Siemens Canada valued at $100,000 to the Fleming College School of Trades and Technology.
“Siemens Canada has been a long-time supporter of Fleming College,” said college president, Tony Tilly. “They have provided funds for bursaries and academic awards as well as supported several of our capital campaigns. We are honoured to call Siemens Canada a friend of Fleming College and are thrilled to recognize their most recent $100,000 contribution of equipment and training to the School of Trades and Technology.”
In recognition of the support, Fleming College has renamed an area of the Instrumentation Lab, located on the mezzanine level, “The Learning Loft” which houses the majority of the donated equipment.
“Currently there are three programs that will benefit from the Learning Loft, training and support services provided by Siemens Canada — the Electrician Apprentice program, the Electrical Technician program and the Instrumentation and Control program,” said Maxine Mann, dean of Trades and Technology. “That is approximately 200 students a year, so this is a really important gift contributing to the success of so many students.”
The products donated by Siemens are from the factory automation and process instrumentation product portfolios which are used in the automotive, food and beverage, chemical, oil & gas, and other process industries.
“In order for Canada to remain competitive and grow our manufacturing sector, we must nurture a skilled workforce and increase collaboration between industry and academics,” said Joris Myny, senior vice-president of Digital Factory and Process Drives, Siemens Canada. “With this in-kind donation, Fleming College now has the most innovative product portfolio to educate and train students so they have the advanced skills needed by Canadian industry.”
“The Siemens equipment and TIA Portal Software will allow us to teach PLC control along with up-to-date and in-demand HMI programming, device integration and data visualization techniques. The equipment provides a platform on which we can provide the ultimate hands-on experience while having the ability to adapt to changing industry demands,” added Fleming program coordinator, Blane Bell.
