Living with Technology

Steve Krar is a dynamic force, tirelessly promoting and educating experts and the general public about the merits of manufacturing and the rewards of manufacturing careers. A passionate advocate of technological training, and an author whose textbooks on manufacturing have sold more than one million copies worldwide, Steve Krar is an exceptional individual whose work will continue to have an impact for generations to come.

Advanced Manufacturing magazine is pleased to showcase some of his writings in this special section of our website.

Now in his eighties, Krar continues to publish textbooks, magazine and newspaper articles and travels the world to learn about new and emerging technologies like nanotechnology and lean manufacturing techniques. In 2005, he launched the Productivity Development Center, to help Canadian companies learn more about productivity enhancing manufacturing practices. In 2006, he launched a new online seminar series using the latest technologies to promote manufacturing education worldwide. In 2007, the first in his series of 50 articles on manufacturing and technology were published in the Welland Tribune newspaper. In 2008, Steve will host, and organize the 46th annual Advanced Technology Think Tank gathering that brings Canadian and American manufacturing and industry leaders to exchange views and information.

Here’s a brief history of his career as a teacher, motivator and prolific author.

  • 21 years teaching machine trades and Director of the Technical Department.
  • 10 years on the technical teacher training summer staff, Ontario College of Education, University of Toronto.
  • Coordinator of a group of 30 authors who, over the past 48 years, have written 77 books (Machine Tool, Manufacturing Technology, and Lean Manufacturing principles) with translations in four languages; circulation over 1,700,000 copies.
  • Written 50 magazine articles on technical education and Machine Tool and Manufacturing Technology for number of educational and industrial magazines.
  • Educational Chairman of the Ontario Vocational Education Association for 6 years. Set up and coordinated 25 technological courses for educators with industries in the United States and Canada.
  • 48 years of educational and industrial research with emphasis on Machine Tools and Manufacturing. Technology Associate Director of the Partnership for Manufacturing Productivity program, an alliance of community college, technical institute, and university instructors.
  • 2 years, consultant to the National Tooling and Machining Association developing curriculum and teacher upgrading.
  • A member of the American Technical Education Association's "National Advisory Council on Technical Education".
  • A member of the Ontario Government Commission – "Vision 2000" to update community college technological programs.
  • A Life Member of the Society of Manufacturing
