Mitsubishi Motors pres., EVP, to resign over mileage scandal

May 18, 2016 – Mitsubishi Motors Corp. has announced that Testuro Aikawa, president and COO, and Ryugo Nakao, executive vice president, will be resigning to take responsibility for the mileage cheating scandal unfolding at the Japanese automaker.

“As our announcement today on the Report to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism concerning improper conduct in fuel consumption testing of vehicles manufactured by MMC shows, MMC has caused tremendous trouble and concern to our customers and all of our stakeholders,” according to the company statement.

The official date of resignation is June 24.

Nissan found the faked mileage tests because of a discrepancy with its own tests on Mitsubishi-manufactured minicar models with tiny engines that had been sold under the Nissan brand.

Mitsubishi says rigging goes back 25 years, and may involve all models, including discontinued ones.
