Toyota Canada recalls another 200,000 vehicles

Toyota Canada Inc. is conducting another voluntary safety recall; this time involving 200,000 2005-2008 Model Year Corolla and Matrix vehicles sold in Canada. The concern is that some engine control modules (ECM) may have been improperly manufactured.

Approximately 136,000 Corollas and 64,300 Matrix vehicles are involved in the recall in Canada. Meanwhile, more than a million of the same model year vehicles are being recalled in the U.S. General Motors is also recalling 200,000 Pontiac Vibes – which were built by Toyota and GM – in North America over the engine concerns.

According to Toyota Canada: "On vehicles equipped with the 1ZZ-FE engine and two-wheel drive, there is a possibility that a crack may develop at certain solder points or on the electronic component used to protect circuits against excessive voltage (varistor) on the ECM’s circuit board. In most cases, if a crack occurs at certain solder points or on certain varistors, the ‘check engine’ light may illuminate, harsh shifting could result or the engine may not start. In a small number of cases, should cracking occur on particular solder points or varistors, the engine could stop while the vehicle is being driven."

Toyota Canada is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this condition in Canada. However, three accidents in the U.S. are being linked to the issue.

As part of the recall, the ECM on involved vehicles will be replaced at no charge to the owner. Beginning in mid-September 2010, Toyota will mail an interim notification to advise owners of this recall. A second notice will be sent when replacement parts become available to complete repairs. Owners who have previously paid for replacement of the ECM to address this specific condition should refer to the owner letter for reimbursement consideration instructions.
