Jan. 20, 2015 – Maplehurst Bakeries, a subsidiary of George Weston Ltd., is buying Creative Occasions Inc., a manufacturer of decorated cakes, for an undisclosed sum. The purchase is expected to close by the end of the month.

Founded in 1882, Toronto, Ont.-based George Weston Ltd. represents some of Canada’s largest food processing and distribution groups. It has two reportable operating segments: Loblaw (operated by Loblaw Companies Ltd.) and Weston Foods.

“This strategic acquisition adds talented people, high quality new products and capability to our growing cake portfolio,” said Kevin McDonough, president of Weston Foods’ frozen and biscuit divisions. “It will support the growing needs of our customers as we plan to offer an expanded and high quality portfolio of products to our customers throughout the United States and Canada.”

Nashville, Tenn.,-based Maplehurst Bakeries, with products sold across North America, currently operates facilities in Washington, New Hampshire, New York, Georgia, Illinois and Indiana.
