Ontario loses manufacturing jobs in July

Ottawa, Ont. – A new Statistics Canada report says Ontario lost about 41,000 manufacturing jobs in July as part of the worst single-month drop since the early 1990s.

According to StatsCan, the country lost 55,000 jobs in July, with many of those from Ontarioís manufacturing sector. Ontario lost 19,000 jobs overall, but its unemployment rate actually dropped to 6.4 per cent from 6.7 per cent as an estimated 42,000 people left the job market.
In the last year alone, employment in manufacturing has dropped by 88,000, with almost all the losses in Ontario.
Ken Georgetti, president of the Canadian Labour Congress, told the Canadian Press the news is a catastrophe for working families.
"These numbers are truly shocking," he said. "Canadians haven’t experienced job losses like this since 17 years ago, when the country was in full recession.
"Since this time last year, we’ve lost another 88,000 manufacturing jobs. Now, in the middle of the summer, we’re seeing people give up on the job market altogether."
