August 8, 2018 – Phoenix Contact’s QUINT line now provides IEC 61508 SIL-rated power supply solutions to fulfill critical safety requirements.

The company has designed a fully loaded SIL 3 power supply solution to meet rigorous SIL 3 safety regulations.

Safety Integrity Level (SIL) is a measure of safety system performance in terms of the probability of failure on demand. The SIL rating of a device reflects the degree of reliability in which the product has to fail safely. As the SIL increases, the safety level of the product increases, meaning the probability that the system will fail to perform properly decreases. Often used in the processing industry, SIL provides intricate safety regulations to ensure the avoidance of catastrophic accidents and errors that can be detrimental to the most stringent operations.

The overvoltage protection (OVP) circuitry built into the QUINT4-PS/1AC/24DC/20 (2904602) power supply and the QUINT4-S-ORING/12-24DC/1X40/+ (2907753) redundancy module have been certified to the electrical safety in accordance to IEC 61508 and multiple EMC standards.

The OVP circuitry build in the Phoenix Contact QUINT4-PS/1AC/24DC/20 (2904602) with the redundancy module QUINT4-S-ORING/12-24DC/1X40/+ (2907753) can be used to set up single or redundant bulk power system with a proven OVP. This system can be used in SIL 3 applications according to IEC 61508. The safety function is to limit the output voltage to 32 V DC. If the voltage rises above 32 V DC, the device will switch off, creating a safe state of no output voltage.
