December 10, 2018 – Mercer International Inc. has completed its previously announced acquisition of Daishowa-Marubeni International Ltd. (DMI), which owns 100 per cent of a bleached kraft pulp mill in Peace River, Alberta.

The deal was worth $465 million.

DMI also owns a 50 per cent interest in the Cariboo Pulp and Paper Company, a joint venture that operates a bleached kraft pulp mill in Quesnel, British Columbia.

“We are pleased to announce the completion of our strategic acquisition of DMI, which increases our current Canadian operations and presence in Asia and expands our product offering to include northern bleach hardwood kraft pulp,” says David M. Gandossi, chief executive officer of Mercer.

Mercer, one of the world’s largest producers of NBSK pulp, says the deal will allow for a 41 per cent increase in pulp production. DMI’s total annual production capacity is approximately 648,500 ADMT premium-grade NBSK and NBHK market pulp.

“We welcome DMI’s employees to the Mercer team and look forward to working with our new government, community and first nations partners in alignment with our core values of health and safety, sustainability, integrity, innovation and performance excellence,” says Gandossi.

Mercer International is a global wood products manufacturing company.
