Unifor signs agreements to transition workers from Oshawa GM plant

August 15, 2019 – The union representing workers at the General Motors Oshawa plant says it has been negotiating fair closure/restructuring agreements for independent parts and suppliers workers impacted by the forthcoming assembly line closure.

Unifor has reached deals with Marek Hospitality, Oakley Industries and Syncreon Supplier Park to help transition workers to new employment, with enhanced severance packages, health care plan extensions and employer funding for an adjustment centre in Oshawa.

“Unifor is fighting for all workers impacted by the assembly line closure,” says Colin James, Unifor Local 222 president. “Since day one, we faced an uphill battle for parts supplier workers and through the efforts of many, Unifor is making progress for our members.”

The company is calling on other independent parts and suppliers companies to assist with the transition.
