Humber grads head to WorldSkills 2019 for mechatronics competition

August 21, 2019 – Two electromechanical engineering technology grads from Humber College are heading to Russia this week to compete in the WorldSkills 2019 competition.

Students and faculty gathered for a rally at the Barrett Centre for Technology Innovation (Barrett CTI) on Humber’s campus in Etobicoke, Ontario on August 14 to send off Bogdan Malynovskyy and Mateusz Cwalinski, who will be competiing in mechatronics at the contest in Kazan, Russia from August 22 to 27.

“I’m incredibly amazed by the dedication, the commitment, and almost singular focus to the task that these two gentlemen representing us abroad have been putting in to prepare themselves,” Chris Whitaker, president and CEO, told Humber Today. “They are truly role models and exemplars of great students.”

Malynovskyy and Cwalinski were trained for the event by Neal Mohammed, director of Barrett CTI. “I’m proud that this new facility has optimized our training capacity,” he said. “By training on modern equipment and technology similar to the ones used at the WorldSkills competition, our student knowledge and confidence has rapidly increased.”

The team will be evaluated on a number of criteria by the WorldSkills judges as they develop their mechatronics system in competition, including the implementation of hydraulics, pneumatics, electrical drives, robotics and handling systems, HMI and vision systems, and PLCs.

Representatives from Humber industry partners Festo Didactic Inc., DMG MORI Canada Inc., and KUKA Robotics Canada Ltd. all attended the event. The automation companies have all donated equipment for use at the Barrett CTI facility.

Humber students have been participating in Skills Ontario and Skills Canada competitions since 2004, winning a total of 26 gold, 12 silver and three bronze medals.

More than 1,300 young professionals from over 70 countries will compete across 56 skills categories in the 45th annual WorldSkills competition.
