Students shine at Ontario Technological Skills Competition

More than 1,800 high school and post-secondary students from across the province gathered in Waterloo, Ont., earlier this month to participate in the 22nd annual Ontario Technological Skills Competition (OTSC) – the largest competition of its kind in the country. Hosted by Skills Canada – Ontario, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting careers in the skilled trades and technologies to young people in Ontario, the two-day event is an Olympics-style skilled trades spectacle featuring 63 different contest areas covering a wide range of sectors – everything from aesthetics to aircraft maintenance. The industrial contests saw 230 students compete in robotics, mechatronics, machining, welding and industrial wiring categories, each hoping to win a medal in their area of expertise.

Thirty thousand visitors watched competitors vie for gold, silver and bronze medals. Some top competitors also won scholarships sponsored by industry and professional associations.

Competitors who won gold in most of the OTSC contests will advance to the Skills Canada National Competition, which takes place this year in Quebec City on June 1-4.
