Evacuation triggered when fire hits piece of Regina’s auto history

May 3, 2017 – An old Regina auto plant that dates back to the late 1920s has been hit by fire.

Nearby businesses were evacuated and power in the area was cut as a precaution when flames broke out Monday evening at the historic former General Motors building.

The blaze engulfed the back of the central-area structure before firefighters managed to get it under control around midnight.

There are no reports of injuries and no immediate word on the extent of the damage.

The plant turned out cars and trucks for several years prior to the Second World War, when it switched from civilian to military production.

The building, which has seen several tenants over the years, was used in part by the National Defence Department after the war before the provincial government took it over in 1967.
