ThyssenKrupp shutting down Toronto elevator plant

Oct. 26 2015 – ThyssenKrupp Elevator Americas has announced the phased closure of its Northern Elevator manufacturing operations in Toronto, Ont., and will consolidate manufacturing at its  U.S. operations in Middleton, Tenn. The Toronto facility will cease manufacturing effective summer 2016.

The strategic change is part of a broad-based plan to “ensure the company can meet customer demands while responsibly managing the challenges presented in today’s marketplace.” The elevator group will continue to employ more than 1,600 people in the country, while another 2,750 work for other ThyssenKrupp companies in Canada.

“This was not an easy decision and comes after an extensive review of our business,” said Rich Hussey, president and CEO of ThyssenKrupp Elevator Americas. “By consolidating manufacturing operations, we can more efficiently provide high-quality products and customer service while expanding our engineering focus. Our customers asked us for enhanced technical support and field operations assistance in the region; by restructuring we can meet their needs.”

As a result of the action, approximately 165 employees at the Toronto-area facility will be affected. “We regret the impact this decision will have on the employees who have greatly contributed to supplying our customers with high-quality products,” said Hussey. “We hold our employees in the highest regard and we will support them during this transition.”
