Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) has named Gerard McDonald, P.Eng., MBA, as the association’s new registrar. McDonald will join PEO on January 6, 2014, replacing Michael Price, P.Eng., MBA, FEC, who has served as acting chief executive officer and registrar since October 2012.

As registrar, McDonald will be responsible for PEO’s administration of the Professional Engineers Act. Under the authority of the act, PEO licenses professional engineers, and sets standards for and regulates engineering in Ontario so that the public interest is served and protected.

McDonald has spent the greater part of his career in public service roles within the country’s transportation sector, including holding several leadership positions within Transport Canada. He is currently assistant deputy minister, safety and security. He also served as executive director of the Transportation Safety Board of Canada from 2006 to 2009.

McDonald holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of Ottawa and a Bachelor of Applied Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Waterloo. He has been licensed to practise professional engineering in Ontario since 1984.
