Modern Engineering has won the 2013 Business of the Year Award from the Delta Chamber of Commerce.

The Delta, B.C.-based company is a provider of CNC automation and machining, milling and turning solutions, supplying customers from Europe and New Zealand to North America. As a family owned business, they attribute much of their success to their valued employees, who are able to participate in a profit-sharing program introduced in 2011.

“I felt proud of the people of our company. Many people go to work day in and day out feeling that no one cares about what they are doing,” said Udo Jahn, the company’s general manager. “It is nice for them to be recognized.”

“I believe we won for two reasons,” Jahn said. “First, Modern is an innovative company that believes in continuous investment in its equipment and employees, allowing us to strive for global competitiveness. Second, we reach out to high schools, and employ young people with a desired interest in manufacturing, giving them the opportunity to participate in this field while still attending school. We believe in giving young people — who are largely ignored by businesses because of their lack of experience — the chance at a real career, and we are willing to train them throughout the stages of growth necessary.”
