GM plant aims to build more engine variants

Aug. 19, 2015 – GM Canada’s St. Catharines Powertrain facility plans to produce more variants of the 3.6L V6 engine currently being built at the plant, thanks to the $13-million investment announced by the automaker earlier this month.  

Stephen Carlisle, president and managing director of GM Canada said, “This new investment in our St. Catharines Powertrain facility will provide us with more options and capability for the future. It’s another example of how GM is living up to its commitments and building solid capability for the future in Canada.”

The plant is one of North America’s largest engine and transmission plants, said the automotive company. It produces a range of V6 and V8 engines as well as transmissions for a range of GM products.

“GM has worked closely with its Unifor partners to develop and implement innovative approaches that support the plant’s ongoing focus on delivering leading quality, productivity, cost competitiveness and environmental excellence,” said company representatives.

Examples include: joint GM/Unifor productivity and quality initiatives based upon team-based problem-solving; collaborative supplier relations that promote efficient delivery of parts; teamwork that leverages lessons learned and engineering expertise; and collaboration on programs that aim to reduce energy use and greenhouse gases.
