ABB Campus Montreal achieves LEED Silver
Nov. 21, 2017 - The Canadian Green Building Council has certified ABB’s Montreal, Que., campus with LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver accreditation.
LEED is a rating system that is recognized as the international mark of excellence for green building in 150 countries. The rating system enables building owners and operators to measure and benchmark building performance, impact on the environment and ways to increase efficiencies.
This past May, the company unveiled the $90-million project to make its new 300,000-square-foot corporate headquarters leaner, greener and more capable of growth. Located in Technoparc Montreal, the building serves more than 700 employees previously spread across six locations in Greater Montreal. The campus houses research and development, manufacturing, assembly (RDA) and testing for ABB’s energy value chain in the province.
In order to meet the selection criteria, ABB was required to meet a minimum of 40 points, Campus Montreal scored a 54. Each point responds to a number of requirements that covers every aspect of a sustainable design including, energy performance of the site, the materials and resources used and the innovation involved.
“The ABB team has accomplished a significant environmental milestone,” said Nathalie Pilon, president of ABB in Canada. “The LEED Silver certification recognizes the commitment we have made to contributing to a clean future for Canada by reducing our footprint today, and well into the future.”
Some of ABB’s key achievements recognized in the certification process include:
• Incorporating natural light throughout the entire building, including the RDA. There are also open concept working spaces, green garden certified furniture, ergonomic and height adjustable work stations, 11 green walls, increased recycling capabilities, low consumption toilets, efficient heating and cooling including the recirculation of over 2MW of heat generated through testing activities in the RDA back into the building, and efficient LED motion detection lighting in most of the structure.
• The installation of three green roofs and a white roof to reduce the absorption of heat on the main structure, electric vehicle charging stations, bike racks for employees and visitors, and a preferred parking program for carpooling and hybrid vehicles.
“We wish to thank all of our professionals and team leaders who contributed to the Base Building and Tenant Improvement work that has enabled us to achieve this designation,” said Domenic Fabiano, vice president, Business Development and Pre-Construction, Broccolini Ownership Group. “Our collaborative efforts and commitment to deliver a landmark project are being recognized. We are confident that ABB will benefit from a viable and sustainable campus in the years ahead.”
