PODCAST: #ChooseToChallenge with engineer Jenan Abderrahman
By Kristina Urquhart
This special episode of Machine Language celebrates International Women’s Day on March 8 by focusing on some of the challenges and opportunities for women in the sector.
Jenan Abderrahman is an engineer and part-time robotics teacher who is passionate about inspiring kids and young women to take up careers in STEM fields.
She is also an advocate for diversity and inclusion in the workplace. As young Muslim woman working in engineering, Abderrahman says she found ways to adapt to an industrial culture that was not always accommodating to women.
In 2019, she joined the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers’ Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee, where she has helped to implement a guide to safety clothes that are inclusive of religious diversity.
In the episode, Abderrahman discusses her work in engineering, process control and automation, the challenges she’s faced along the way, and the role she currently plays in getting youth interested in robotics.
