Transcontinental to close Montreal plant in January

Nov. 7, 2017 – Transcontinental Inc. announced today the consolidation of its newspaper printing activities in Quebec into three plants, and consequently the closure of Montreal-based Transcontinental Métropolitain by early next year.
The Quebec-based printing and media company says the decision was influenced by the decline of the newspaper printing market, and more specifically, in connection with the upcoming end of the printing of La Presse daily newspaper.
La Presse stopped publishing a daily print edition in January 2016, and has announced that its last Saturday print edition will be published on December 30.
Transcontinental Métropolitain’s printing activities will be transferred to the Transcontinental Transmag plant in Montreal, while Transcontinental de la Capitale in Québec City and Transcontinental Qualimax in Gatineau will also increase work as a result.
Built in 2003, the Transcontinental Métropolitain plant currently employs a workforce of nearly 60.
“TC Transcontinental believes it will be able to offer employment opportunities to the majority of them within its other business units since there are several positions to be filled at the moment and others that will need to be filled in the coming months. Nevertheless, some job losses will result from the closure of the plant.
