Festo introduces EMCA integrated positioning drive

Jul. 5, 2017 – Festo describes its new EMCA positioning drive as a compact, easy-to-install, integrated drive system for an array of automated manufacturing applications.

According to Festo, the positioning drive consists of a “maintenance-free, wear-resistant” brushless DC motor with built-in power and control electronics. That dispenses with the need for long motor cables, improves electromagnetic compatibility and requires less space than comparable setups using separate components, while its built-in monitoring functions ensure safety and reliability, says Festo. Suitable applications for the EMCA include format changeovers in packaging and assembly systems as well as applications like roller adjustment, work piece alignment, tool setting and positioning in automatic coiling systems. Festo says the EMCA can be easily integrated with the company’s range of electro-mechanical axis as part of a complete robotic handling system. The unit is equipped with a 24 V DC power supply and senses absolute position using a single-turn encoder or optional multi-turn displacement encoder for up to four billion revolutions, says Festo, adding that the EMCA is available in two motor lengths and power classes, and can deliver peak torque of up to 0.91 Nm, with a maximum rotational speed of 3,500 RPM and peak power output of up to 200 W.
