June 2, 2025, Canada — Ahead of the First Ministers’ Meeting beginning today in Saskatoon, Ontario Premier Doug Ford signed memorandums of understanding with Premier Scott Moe of Saskatchewan, Premier Danielle Smith of Alberta and Premier Rob Lantz of Prince Edward Island to eliminate trade barriers between the provinces.
“With President Trump threatening our economy, there’s never been a more important time to boost internal trade and cooperation between provinces,” said Ford in a press statement. “By signing these agreements and working together, we’re helping Canada unlock up to $200 billion in economic potential and standing shoulder to shoulder to protect the future of Canadian workers across the country, not just in Ontario.”
With these signed memorandums and some pieces of new legislation being introduced in the province, Ontario is aiming to expand the trade of goods and services across Canadian jurisdictions, cut unnecessary red take holding back Canadian businesses and open new pathways for the movement of qualified, in-demand workers throughout the country.
Two-way trade in goods and services between Ontario other provinces and territories was worth over $326 billion in 2023, the province reported in a press statement.
The Ontario government will continue to work with its federal, provincial and territorial partners through the Canadian Free Trade Agreement and other trade-enhancing initiatives to advance interprovincial trade across Canada.
