Magnetic rotary encoder

The AS5046 12-bit resolution magnetic rotary encoder from austriamicrosystems provides design engineers with contactless detection of the rotation angle and vertical distance of a magnet placed above the integrated circuit. The device can detect a vertical distance of several millimetres. The AS5046 combines both Hall elements and signal processor on one silicon chip. It communicates with an external microcontroller over a two-wire serial interface. For standalone operation, the AS5046 provides a programmable ratiometric analogue output. In addition to rotation and push-button functionality, the encoder supports detection of the magnetís tilt angle. The chip can be operated at either 3.3- or five-volt supply, and can operate in temperatures from -40 to 125 C.
