GM Canada launches new production line

GM Canada recently announced that it will invest $245 million to produce more fuel-efficient transmissions at its St. Catharines Powertrain Facility.
The facility will start producing the six-speed transmissions in early 2012 — four months ahead of schedule — and will generate approximately 400 jobs.
“We are encouraged by this further evidence that GM Canada is on the road to recovery, and its commitment to doing business in Canada,” Tony Clement, minister of industry, said in a statement.
The announcement comes just months after the facility got another $235 million boost to support next generation engine production in 2013. Together, approximately 800 jobs have been secured at the plant, GM said. The plant will supply transmissions to both the CAMI Assembly plant in Ingersoll and the Oshawa Assembly Plant for the Chevrolet Equinox, GMC Terrain and Buick Regal.
