Toyota Motor Corp. is recalling approximately 270,000 cars worldwide due to potentially faulty engines.

The affected cars are primarily Lexus vehicles and, in the U.S., they are 2006, 2007 and 2008 GS, IS and LS models that are powered by 4.6 and 5.0 litre V6 engines.

According to the company, the problem arose from “slight variations” in the manufacturing process which allowed foreign material to have contaminated a number of the valve springs.

The defective valve springs could potentially cause a vehicle to make abnormal engine noise or idle. In very rare instances, the engine may stop while the vehicle is in operation. Lexus estimates that the chance of this happening is less than 0.2%.

Up until this point, the company says it hasn’t received any reports of accidents or injuries related to the faulty valve springs.
